Fun Family Time At The Science Circus At Robinsons Place Bacolod
The Mind Museum’s traveling exhibition, The Science Circus, goes to Bacolod City!
It is not everyday that my family and I go to a circus and mind you, it is not the usual circus with animals, acrobats, jugglers etc. but something more fun and educational. Robinsons Place Bacolod brings over the Science Circus to Bacolod City. This exhibit by The Mind Museum (its 5th traveling exhibition), is a mix of circus fun, art, and Science in one interesting and responsive exhibit.
There is still a lot of time to visit since it just started last April 05 and will be until May 06, 2018 at the mall’s fountain area. Ticket price is only Php 50 (available for sale at the gate) but a single receipt purchase of Php 1,000 from Robinsons Department Store, Robinsons Supermarket, its subsidiaries, and participating tenants entitles a customer a free pass to the exhibit. Check below for the complete list of affiliates and mall partners.
I, together with my husband and daughter Kimy, went to the circus’ April 05 grand opening. It was hosted by Bacolod’s very own John Arceo, and personalities like councilor Cindy Rojas and Mr. Joseph Sian, Vismin Operations Director of Robinsons Land, as well as representatives from the Mind Museum, attended the event.

The 4D interactive exhibits aims to let visitors experience and even explain facts of science that are found and experienced in our everyday lives. It is also a perfect opportunity for families to have a unique and exciting bonding and learning experience.
The exhibit area has this cheerful and colorful front that prepares you for what is ahead. The Science Circus has 12 sections on display consisting of interactive exhibits that mislead the senses and baffle the mind. Each section has an information card which will guide you on how to work the display. Some of the cards contain scientific information while others provide instructions. In this circus, you cannot always trust your senses. Parts of Science Circus will unveil the “blindness” of the mind’s eye through floating heads and bodies, deceptive room interiors, playful eyes that follow you wherever you go, and other mind-boggling illusions.
My family’s favorite is the Perception Room, eventhough I got a little dizzy going inside the room. It changes your perception of reality. Kimy also likes the Spinning Chair which you would be challenged to spin in. Actually, she likes all the interactive exhibits and has been bugging me to take her there again. We had such an amazing time just walking around the Science Circus!
WHAT TO SEE AT THE SCIENCE CIRCUS
ANTI-GRAVITY ILLUSION
Can you defy gravity? Demonstrate your powers of levitation to your friends with the Anti-Gravity Illusion! Place one leg behind the mirror, and another leg in front, then strike a pose! The mirror will reflect your leg to make it appear as if both legs are off the ground.
FLOATING HEAD
Have a friend go behind the table and stick his or her head out. Your friend is now a talking, disembodied head!
Don’t worry, your friend is just fine. What you are seeing is the result of the reflection of light in the two mirrors. The mirrors reflect the walls and the floor, making your brain think there’s space underneath the table. In truth, your friend’s body is safely hidden behind those mirrors. Makes you reflect on the magic of science, eh?
BIG / SMALL 3D ILLUSION
gather your friends and watch them shrink or grow before your very eyes! This play on perspective uses an object’s distance to make it look smaller than it actually is. Pose with giant props to enhance the illusion.
ELECTRIC SPIRAL
All aboard the Electric Spiral! Ride with three of your friends, and push the bars in front of you forward. You will start to spin, faster and faster you go. You won’t be able to fly, but the machine will convert your energy into electricity, powering the carousel’s lights in a dazzling spectacle! This carousel is inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s Aerial Screw.
PERCEPTION ROOM
How confident are you of what your senses tell you? Go inside and see what happens when your senses give conflicting reports about the world.
The Perception Room was designed to make your eyes think the floor is horizontal and the walls vertical. However, your internal sense of up and and down (which is found in the organ in your inner ear) says something else.
Enter this room at your own risk! The experience of being inside can be dizzying.
FOLLOWING EYES
When you’re under the Big Top, everyone’s eyes are on you! But it is just in your head?
Our brains are wired to recognize faces in patterns, and while the faces of your audience are flat, their convex pupils set in concave eyes give the eerie illusion of a 3-dimensional gaze that follows you around the room.
SPINNING CHAIR
Spin round and round like a human top in this chair. believe it or not, you can spin a full 360 degrees in it without falling!
KALEIDOSCOPE SELFIE
For a unique selfie souvenir, take a peek into the Selfie Kaleidoscope with your friend on the other side! Your face will be reflected in the kaleidoscope’s multiple mirrors and form striking, psychedelic patterns.
STILTS 3D ART ILLUSION
Impress your friends with a stunt that the finest stilt-walkers would be proud of, and strike a pose from hundreds of feet up!
The art plays with your sense of depth and perspective, and reconstructs a flat canvas into a convincing 3-dimensional view.
STEADY HANDS
A rabbit or a duck? A spiral or an eye? Your brain interprets the image in two different ways, so the images seem to flip back and forth from one to another.
Keep a steady hand as you maneuver through the wire outlines of each figure! You can even challenge yourself or your friend for a game and see who can steadily maneuver through the wires under time pressure.
Check what the fuss is all about and visit the Science Circus at Robinsons Place Bacolod during mall hours until May 06, 2018.
